Jazz dance is a style of dance that requires flexibility and ballet foundation. It is characterized by syncopated rhythms, ensemble playing, and varying degrees of improvisation. Jazz is considered a form of dance shared by a broad range of dance styles. Before the 1950s, Jazz dance referred to dance styles that originated from African American dance. In the 1950s, a new genre of Jazz dance—modern jazz dance—emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Every individual style of Jazz dance has roots traceable to one of these two distinct origins. Last, as in most forms of dance, technique is the foundation for all Jazz movements and Jazz dancers benefit from Ballet work and technique.
